Who we are

The Consulate General of Belgium in New York provides assistance (issuance of passports, repatriation, …) to Belgian nationals visiting or residing in the 23 American states, falling within its jurisdiction. It also processes visa applications (short or long stay) submitted by foreigners wishing to go to Belgium (students, researchers, …).

In addition, the Consulate General observes and analyses the political and socio-economic situation in the states of the jurisdiction to increase the understanding of the United States and its policies and to collaborate on shared interests.

Another important role of the Consulate General is to promote the image of Belgium through events like receptions, exhibitions, lectures, …

The Consulate General consists of a staff of 10 people.

What we are looking for

We are seeking a motivated multi-functional, dynamic and creative Chef to join our team and prepare delicious meals for the guests at the residence of the Consul General.

Chef responsibilities include studying recipes, setting up menus and preparing high-quality dishes.

He/She should be able to delegate tasks to kitchen staff to ensure meals are prepared in a timely manner and be familiar with sanitation regulations.

Job description

His/her main duties will include:

  • Set up the kitchen with cooking utensils and equipment, like knives, pans and kitchen scales
  • Study each recipe and gather all necessary ingredients
  • Cook food in a timely manner
  • Delegate tasks to kitchen staff
  • Inform wait staff about “daily” specials
  • Ensure appealing plate presentation
  • Supervise Cooks and assist as needed
  • Slightly modify recipes to meet customers’ needs and requests (e.g. reduce salt, remove dairy)
  • Monitor food stock and place orders
  • Check freshness of food and discard expired items
  • Experiment with recipes and suggest new ingredients
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations within the kitchen area

Profile

We are looking for an experienced Chef or Cook who has

  • Hands-on experience with various kitchen equipment (e.g. grillers and pasta makers)
  • Advanced knowledge of culinary, baking and pastry techniques
  • Leadership skills
  • Ability to remain calm and undertake various tasks
  • Excellent time and stock management abilities and organizational skills
  • Up-to-date knowledge of cooking techniques and recipes
  • Familiarity with sanitation regulations
  • Occasionally serve food
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area, including handling utensils, equipment and dishes
  • Buy, order, handle and store ingredients and food
  • Maintain food safety and sanitation standards
  • Clean and sanitize work areas, equipment and utensils
  • Follow recipes, including measuring, weighing and mixing ingredients
  • Bake, grill, steam and boil meats, vegetables, fish, poultry and other foods
  • Present, garnish and arrange final dishes
  • Accommodate guests’ special requests
  • Elaborate a full menu
  • Ensure that all dishes are cooked well and presented in an aesthetically pleasing way

The candidate should:

  • Be a good team player, have good interpersonal skills
  • Be culturally sensitive
  • Be reliable and trustworthy

Required qualifications

  • High school diploma (Culinary school diploma preferred)
  • Have excellent English language skills
  • 5+ years' experience (references required)
  • Proof of legal residence and work permit in the USA
