Henri Vantieghem appointed Consul General of Belgium in Los Angeles

Henri Vantieghem, after serving four and half year as Consul General of Belgium in Istanbul, Turkey, has been appointed Consul General of Belgium in Los Angeles. His new jurisdiction covers: the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaï, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming; the American territory from the Samoa Islands; the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the Territory of Guam.

I am extremely proud to serve in the United States. I believe that Los Angeles will be a highlight in my career : after one of the oldest cities in the world, Istanbul, I am now moving to one of the most recent. I marvel at how similar the ancient and the new world are, and yet, how differently we can approach some issues. But we are bound by a common project for a more democratic and safer world. I hope that my action in LA will strengthen the bilateral ties between Belgium and the US.” said Consul General Vantieghem when he took office in Los Angeles on August 10th 2016.

Mr. Vantieghem brings to this posting 18 years of diplomatic experience acquired as non-resident diplomat for Iraq (2000-2003); Coordinator Justice and Home affairs at the Permanent representation of Belgium to the European Union (2003-2005);  Diplomatic council at the private office of the Minister of Justice (2006); Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Belgium in Ankara, Turkey (2006-2009); Deputy Director of Disarmament department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2009-2012) and Consul General of Belgium in Istanbul (2012-2016).

Before joining the diplomatic service, Henri Vantieghem was attorney at law, Bar Association of Brussels; and a Professor of commercial law at the Brussels City Business School (Institut Cooremans des Carrières Commerciales). Mr. Vantieghem is a reserve Navy officer, Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Control of Shipping (NATO organization).
