Today, Jean Van Wetter (40) has been appointed as new director general of the Belgian development agency Enabel. He is taking over from Carl Michiels, who successfully led the agency for 14 years. The board of directors expresses its gratitude to Carl Michiels for his efforts and achievements. After a difficult start, he managed to put the agency on the right track and turn it into an internationally respected organization.

Deputy Prime Ministers Alexander De Croo and Didier Reynders have been following with great concern the developments in the Bedouin community of Khan al-Ahmar. Like the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini and other European countries, they urge the Israeli authorities not to proceed with the demolition of this community, which would lead to the forced displacement of its inhabitants. Much of the infrastructure of this Palestinian community was financed by the EU and its Member States, including Belgium.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo reaffirms Belgium’s support for the humanitarian response in the lake Chad Basin. In the margins of the High Level Conference on the Lake Chad Region in Berlin, the Minister notes that Belgium invests more than 9 million EUR in humanitarian aid this year for the region, where more than 11 million people need aid to survive.

Today, the Council of Ministers approved at first reading a draft law submitted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo that will thoroughly redesign the Belgian development policy. The new legal framework is closely aligned with the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. According to Minister Alexander De Croo, “this is the concluding step of a particularly far-reaching reform of the Belgian development agency over the last few years”.

While the website of the White House and travel guide books continue to advise foreign nationals that they must apply for White House tours through their embassies, this is, in fact, not currently possible. The Office of Protocol at the Department of State, which processed these applications in the past, has suspended the procedure.

Matthieu Branders is the new spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. Since August 1st, he took over from Didier Vanderhasselt who is leaving Brussels to take up his post as Ambassador in Pretoria. As of today, Karl Lagatie joins the team as deputy spokesperson.
