While the website of the White House and travel guide books continue to advise foreign nationals that they must apply for White House tours through their embassies, this is, in fact, not currently possible. The Office of Protocol at the Department of State, which processed these applications in the past, has suspended the procedure.
A number of citizens informed us over the last few days that they had been the victims of attempted scams. They were contacted by con-men who tried to extort money from them over the phone by pretending to be working for our Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In order to make their story more credible, they had managed to have our central telephone number in Brussels appear (02/501.81.11) on the telephone screen of their victims.
We call expressly everyone not to take any kind of action following such calls.
Irma has now become a tropical depression continuing its way over Alabama en Tennessee. It has left a path of destruction which will require a long recovery. There are still many power and phone outages in Florida and also Georgia and providers are working hard on restoring these. Situation locally doesn’t allow all evacuees to go back to their homes yet.
