NEW: From 1 September 2026, when requesting a new eID, citizens registered with our Consulates-Generals in New York and Atlanta will have the option to give a procuration to their respective Consulate-General in order for them to activate their new eID card on their behalf. This optional service will come at an additional fee of 12 USD. The costs for shipping the activated eID are to be borne by the citizen. This is an optional service: it remains possible to make an appointment to activate the eID in person. This service is, at this time, not available at the Consulate-General in Los Angeles or in Washington, DC.
All ID cards issued by EU member states must contain the fingerprints of 2 (index) fingers according to European regulations since mid-2021.
Since 21 June 2021, you, and/or your child (if aged 6 or older), are required to visit the consulate of current registration in person and by appointment to have your biometric data recorded and, at the same time, apply for the electronic identity card (e-ID) and/or a Kids-ID.
